A local music shop recently got in a "Recording King" archtop. A little quick research revealed that the Recording King brand was made by Gibson for guitars sold through Montgomery Ward. It was a nice little guitar; it sounded great, played well up and down the neck, didn't have any cracks, and there was no separation at the neck joint. If it's still there after the holidays, I'm thinking of picking it up. Does anyone have any experience with these guitars? Is there anything I should be looking out for? I remember reading that the Kalamazoo guitars, also made by Gibson, had no truss rod in the neck. Were Recording Kings built in a similar fashion? If it's gone fifty years without any neck problems, will it likely be good for fifty more, or is it a prime age for trouble?
