He's pulling on a bit of string (or horsehair) attached to one of the strings behind the bridge.

The late Neculae Neacsu of Taraf de Haidouks claimed to have invented this technique, and with his enormous international profile and film appearances its likely that he popularized it. Its a great sound.

Can someone please clarify exactly how this technique works? I remember hearing, and seeing this, in Latcho Drom, but I still can't figure it out. The string can't be attached behind the bridge....I just don't get it.

if you think thats good, my mate ian actually saw a guy play a tea chest bass (tea chest with 2*4 nailed on it) with 2 strings, being played with a credit card.Truly awesome. I myself have also seen that violin bridge technique been done but with a chunk of concrete. It was good!
