Good Point

If you've got the time and inclination, it's a good idea to learn how to transpose on the fly; with this stuff it seems much easier than a lot of other styles (i.e., you're dealing with closed chords and changes that can be thought of numerically-I/vi/ii/V, etc.). Yeh you're right it actually is qu...

I can't get me anything in the right key

Hey folks, I notice Bireli plays "I Can't Give You Anything but Love" in F on the Gypsy Project DVD, gadjodrom says play it in G, does anyone know which key is more common for jamming?

DVD help

Recordable DVDs have other issues besides the region encoding and crippled play functionality. First off, as you may know, there are DVD-Rs, DVD+Rs, DVD-RWs, DVD+RWs, each of has a progressively lower chance of playing in any component DVD player (DVD-R has the highest compaitibilty rate right now)....

still on speed

This is turning into a great thread. I like the storytelling metaphor, misinterpreting the masters, composition versus improvisation, human heart rates, all of these concepts really have me thinking a lot about what direction I'm headed musically. Apologies if I came off a bit harshly in my first po...

Speed Freak

Fast passages sound great sometimes (Angelo Debarre comes to mind), but playing an entire song at the "too fast" tempo can definitely ruin the tune. Certain tunes are speed showpieces, sometimes known as hot tunes. Djangology, I disagree that it helps the development of slower playing. In ...

Quiconico - Soir-d'Orage = Free Album

Just had my first listen to Quiconico - Soir-d'Orage, by Nico RUSSO & Quico LEBEL (hence the name), who put out an album for free on the BitTorrent network. It's a bit amatuerish, but hey, for free it ain't bad at all. They do a fairly common set of standards, with a little pepper. I'd say these...

Hi all I really think this needs saying---but i don't want to piss people off--please bear with me!! :-) Jorgenson is a great guitarist but he'd be the first to admit that his right hand technique has NOTHING to do with the correct technique of Django or the gypsies-- There's alot of talk here abou...

Direct URLs

Weelie, the way to do it is this: once the window opens up and the song is playing, there is a link in the window which says "telecharger" (French for dowload" - right click the link and Bob's your proverbial uncle. I had to whine a bit: boy the mp3s are encoded pretty poorly, could ...

Alfonso

Just saw Alfonso jam for 2 hours straight from about 3 foot distance. A nice kid, fantastic player, willing to jam with any beater who knows the chords. He is fast, traditional, and he improvises quite a bit. Also, he looks like a gypsy. Right now my vote is for Alfonso unless Jorgenson pulls someth...

Grisman

David Grisman was regarded by many as the finest mandolin player in the USA through the 80s and 90s. He mostly made his mark in Bluegrass, but he plays music of the world and incorporates it into bluegrass, which is how "Dawg Music" was born. Welcome back to the world, living in that cave ...

Do you know of any other officially released versions of the tune that are worth checking out? Track 15 of the Virtual Gypsy Jazz CD is a nice version of Joseph! Joseph!, by Trio Swing 99. Their credits list the author as "Steinberg/Casman/Johnny & Jones" (sounds like a redneck law fi...
