Rio guitars were made by the German luthier Karl Schneider and claimed to be the first electric guitars produced in Europe. The one Django is playing in the photo probably belonged to Marcel Bianchi and Sarane Ferret also owned one. This photo was taken at the Nice Opera House in 1948 at the first Nice Jazz Festival. Challain Ferret is behind him and you can just see Emmanuel Soudieux on bass. Out-of-shot to the right is Joseph Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli is standing to the left.

You can hear Django playing it at that concert on Integrale Vol 16.

Your reference to Bianchi is doubtful. See here for more background info. Bianchi seems to have a Swiss made Bale guitar:

Most of that stuff on the paulvernonchester site actually came from me. I have had two very reliable sources state that Bianchi owned a RIO guitar. Many of the electric guitars from that time looked very similar and it is difficult to tell exactly which guitar is which unless you can see the name on the headstock. Most of the Rio guitars I have seen have a very different logo design to the one on the guitar Django is playing.

Of course Teddy is right!

The luthier he mentioned was german but made the guitars in his atelier in Switzerland.

Rio guitars have had two logos during time, the first one is on Django's guitar and the second black one is visible on Sarane's one.

Best!

This Rodriguez Guitar is hand crafted by Manuel Jr. himself and glued to create precise balances. From the invisible careful sanding, even inside the body, that ensures the finished instrument's purity of tone
