John Wheatcroft's Ensemble Futur' Swing at Le Q in March

Postby John Wheatcroft » Sun Mar 01, 2009 2:39 pm

John Wheatcroft's Django-inspired acoustic quintet, Ensemble Futur' Swing, is appearing for two dates at Le Quecumbar in Battersea this month on Sunday 15th and Monday 16th March.

The philosophy behind the project is to take the Django style right up to date, with the seamless integration of modern influences, techniques and compositional devices, producing a sound that is rooted in the traditions of the genre, but vital, forward thinking and highly original.

The ensemble features John?s old partner from John Jorgenson?s Quintet, the amazing Andy Mackenzie, along with Jim Clark on rhythm guitar, James Oscroft on percussion and Alan Mian on electric and acoustic basses. The January 09 date was both well attended and well received, and with the quintet going from strength to strength this promises to be an event not to be missed.

John will also be holding a masterclass on the afternoon before Sunday's gig covering both soloing and rhythm techniques. Topics will include: Building up a soloing vocabulary, Establishing a repertoire of tunes, Incorporating be-bop and modern jazz devices into Gypsy Jazz, Chord voicing and comping, Solo construction, Application and integration of arpeggios into soloing technique, Acoustic versus electric technique.

The workshop runs from 11am-4pm and tickets are priced at £30, whilst tickets for the performance ares £13 in advance or £15 on the door. Places are limited so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment. All are available online at www.quecumbar.co.uk
