Topsy

Postby djangology » Wed Jun 09, 2004 7:38 pm

in the Stephane Wrembel "transcribing workshop" he used Minor Blues and Topsy as examples. does anyone else play Topsy and has anyone made or seen a chord chart already made anywhere? i don't trust my own ear yet when i transcribe Django chords but im getting better. i can figure it out myself but was wondering if anyone wanted to donate some chords to me. i noticed that the chart is not in the latest Cosimini books, not in the RNT books, and its not on GadjoDrom.com .

Ebm6 Fm6 | Gbm6 Fm6 | Ebm6 Ebm7/Db | Gb7 F7 |

Bbm6 Cm6 | Dbm6 Cm6 | Bbm6 Bbm7/Ab | Ebm/Gb F7 |

Bb7 //// | //// | Eb //// | //// | C7 //// | //// | F7 //// | //// |

Everything but the brindge is 2 chords per bar. The bridge is a Honeysuckle Rose bridge.

By the way, the ascending and descending 2 bar progressions are equivalent harmonically, so you could play all of one or the other.
The way its written is as the original Basie version.

Hi Guys One of my favorite tunes, I havent listened to the Django version.
Does it resemble the Basie one? Also if you are soloing do you think about
the chords as written in your post or do you think about them like this?
I know the chord shapes could be the same.

l Bbm6 F7/C | Gb7/Db F7/C|
instead of

l Bbm6 Cm6 | Dbm6 Cm6 |

Just Curios
Thanks Tom

i am nearing the end of reading the Dregni biography and somewhere near page 237 Dregni mentions that Topsy wasn't written by Django... I dont have the book with me but it sure did surprise me to read that...

It's written by Count Basie and Eddie Durham.
