Them There Eyes

Postby magritte » Fri May 14, 2004 4:28 pm

Both the Nolan Gig Book and the gadjodrom site have the first 6 bars of
Them There Eyes as:

D D Db Db D D

I have watched and listened carefully to Tchavolo Schmitt play it on video
and, it seems to me, they are just staying on D for 6 bars instead of
dropping to the Db. I also listen to Jimmy Rosenberg and Angelo Debarre
play it (in C) and I don't hear them change the chord down a half step
either.

How do you guys play this?

Many thanks,
magritte

I play it with the Db but on other songs like "Ill See You In MY Dreams" i will sometimes hold on that first F6/9 rather than modulate it to the E7/E13 ...

So basically, i think youll see players hold chords through on many songs, and Django even did this i think. It depends on your soloist i think and also whether or not they are improvising or playing the head.

For example, on Them THere Eyes i think the Db is more appropriate during the head but during solos perhaps holding the chord makes it easier for the soloist? Im just guessing from my own limited experience.
